Supratim Bhattacharjee, Toxic Environment
August 1, 2018 : A child wiping his eyes in Jharia’s toxic environment. Coal is perhaps the most important energy resource that provides for the energy consumption in India as well as a larger share of the world. Jharia in Jharkhand is the most significant coal mine producing the largest share of coal in India and also in the whole of south Asia. Since the days it has come into operation, and from the discovery of underground fires (in 1916), this coal mine has seen a number of deaths. It has been rightly referred to as the death field. The poor lots who engage themselves in the mining activities to earn a living are affected the most. The major reasons of death here are underground fire, suspension of poisonous gases in the air, pollution, etc. Diseases with skin and lungs are thus widespread here. Moreover, extreme conditions of poverty, illnesses and higher illiteracy among the people force the villagers to sell their kids to the coal mining mafias. Nowadays, more are getting associated with this illegal mining activity for less than 2 USD, yet risking their lives a lot more. Jharkhand, India
Supratim Bhattacharjee, Children In Hell
A little boy named Ibrahim (9) warming himself up in winter from the fire lit in the landfill. This phenomenon occurs due to the formation of methane gas in landfill. A landfill is one of the major causes that lead to higher pollution levels. In India, wastes are dumped into open lands causing landfill which in turn contributes to land, air and water (even groundwater) pollution. It is estimated that more than 5 million people lose their lives every year due to these serious environmental issues. Diseases also find its way and affect people greatly. The shocking fact is that a lot number of people are associated with landfill activity including high numbers of children. Poverty, deteriorating family conditions and lack of choice denies them the right to attain formal education. They are often forced to join waste picking profession in order to earn and contribute a living for the family. These children thus easily get affected from the toxic wastes and viruses filled in the area. It makes them more vulnerable to infections and other diseases. Assam, India

Faroe Islands are not really the place where you experience many colourful sunsets and sunrises and I would even say that it’s not the case at all in this beautiful part of the world. Usually fast changing weather helps creating very dramatic photographs with stormy waters and moving or hanging low clouds. Somehow for most of my stay I had good weather but there was 2 or 3 days when I could see the place from completely different perspective. Village of Saksun, founded between XIV and XIV century is an example of how people can build places without negative physical and visual impact on environment. In Faroe Island, it rains 300 days during the year, so the settlers introduced the grass roofs as it provided protection from the sobbing rain and thermal insulation. Saksun, Strymoy, Faroe Islands

environmental photographer of the year

Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management ogłosiła konkurs Environmental Photographer of the Year (EPOTY) w 2007 r. Od ponad dziesięciu lat to międzynarodowe przedsięwzięcie prezentuje zestawienie najlepszych fotografii przyrodniczych i wyjątkowe spojrzenie na relacje ludzi z naturą i skalę wpływu, jaki rozwój człowieka wywarł na środowisko naturalne.

Konkurs uwidacznia ten negatywny wpływ, ale jednocześnie przypomina o naturalnej zdolności ludzi do przetrwania i wprowadzania innowacji, dając nam nadzieję na przezwyciężanie – często antropogenicznych – wyzwań i zrównoważone życie.

EPOTY wspiera wezwanie do pilnych działań, zamieszczone w Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), opracowanych przez ONZ. Fotografie konkursowe ukazują powiązania między rozwojem, ograniczaniem ubóstwa, równością, bezpieczeństwem i działaniami w dziedzinie klimatu oraz bezprecedensowy wysiłek wszystkich sektorów społeczeństwa konieczny do rozwiązania problemów naszych czasów.
